The earliest record of a fortified castle at Fontainebleau dates to 1137. Only about 60 kilometers from central Paris, it was fully refurbished by Napoleon and it is vast with 1500 rooms. It was also used as a German operations site during World War II, .
Since the Middle Ages, Arc en Barrios in northeastern France, has belonged to princes, royal families, and French nobility. The present château was built on the site of a castle that was destroyed in 1793 during the French Revolution.
